Uttaranchal, India

The Journey is part of the experience: the overnight train from Delhi, followed by a nine-hour drive through the Himalayan foothills, with optional overnights en route at village houses. And then comes the really exciting bit: a 90-minute trek along a scenic mule track - the only access to 360˚. You arrive to find your luggage has magically preceded you. The 'room' is, in fact, a simple but stylish cottage (there are only four). There are no fancy gadgets, no butlers and no hairdryers. What you get is tranquility and seclusion, in a place the 21st-century can't penetrate.
