ON TOP OF THE WORLD

It's not often that one finds good food, cashmere-strewn beds, and a fine collection of wine on top of a mountain, particularly in India. But 360 Leti (Below) in the untouched northern Uttaranchal region, has it all. Hikers rave about the hideaway from which to traverse the achingly beautiful mountain scenery, foodies go on about the fare, and city dwellers return talking of the sense of peace, of tranquility, on top of the world.

The three-roomed getaway takes a while to get to: an overnight train from Delhi, then a drive, and then an hour's walk (carrying light luggage). But the highs, apparently, are worth the trek. Abercrombie & Kent (0845 618 2214, www.abercrombiekent.co.uk) offers a week in the Indian Himalayas from £2,900pp, including a three-day hike to 360 Leti, staying in traditional village houses en route, and all travel, meals and wines.
