OVERVIEW
Shakti Ladakh
from may through to the end of september
Shakti brings refined hospitality to the untamed landscapes of Ladakh. In this high-altitude desert dotted with oasis towns and ancient monasteries, 5 village houses, each chosen for its authenticity and spectacular setting, offer unforgettable stays in superlative locations – from the banks of the rushing Indus River to an eagle’s-nest lair facing the snowy wall of the Zanskar Range.
In the far north of the subcontinent, Ladakh occupies a high plateau above 3,500 meters (11,500 feet) and is often referred to as Little Tibet. Its isolated and challenging terrain features a mix of high-altitude desert, snow-capped peaks, and glacial lakes, serving as a refuge for Tibetans fleeing the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Here, their Buddhist traditions remain preserved; you can expect to see prayer flags and the smiling face of the Dalai Lama everywhere.
Awaken, Wander, Discover...
Days dawn with bed tea, just-baked madeleines and birdsong, followed by guided hikes between alpine villages, sunny picnics in apricot orchards and visits to timeless Tibetan monasteries. Expect candlelit dinners in rustic Ladakhi kitchens and breakfasts on terraces that touch the heavens. Explore remote communities where even the most mundane details are fascinating. Enjoy the dawn reveille of robed monks blowing jewel-crusted conch shells on a monastery rooftop to call the faithful to prayer.

May to September Ladakh emerges from winter’s deep-freeze in May and June with mild, clear days and average highs of around 20°C/65F. Nights remain cold and often dip into single digits, the perfect excuse to light in-room bukhari wood stoves and snuggle up to hot water bottles in bed. May and early June offer stunning views to snow-covered mountains and glacial rivers that run emerald and turquoise. By July and August maximum temperatures can reach 30°C/86F, but the mountains start to cool again in September. Temperatures are consistently milder in the lower Nimoo Valley, home to Shakti’s fortress-like Nimoo House with three en-suite bedrooms, shared living and sun-drenched terraces.
SEASON

To/From Delhi, Manali, Srinagar The quickest way to reach Leh/Ladakh is by air; this is also the only means of transport with year-round access. From/To Delhi: Indigo and Air India have daily flights from Delhi to Leh (one hour) during the summer months. From/To Manali: The drive from Leh to Manali (480 km approx) takes two days or longer over switchback mountain passes. From/To Srinagar: Likewise, the drive from Srinagar to Leh (450 km approx) takes a couple of days. It is also possible to fly from Srinagar The land journeys are memorable but please note the accommodation en-route to the Shakti houses is simple and the journeys long. If flying into Leh, allow two days to acclimatise – ideally in a Shakti village house, revelling in the view.

Northern India Nestled in the northern reaches of the sub-continent, at an altitude exceeding 3,500 meters (11,500 feet) on a high plateau, Ladakh is frequently likened to 'little Tibet'. This remote terrain shielded Ladakh from the upheavals of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, preserving one of the world's most intact Tantric Buddhist societies. Here, a high-altitude desert landscape unfolds, ruled by formidable snow-capped peaks and crystalline turquoise lakes, making Ladakh Himalayas an unrivaled gem of picturesque beauty on our planet.
